My art journaling comes from my heart!

I often use my art journaling to work through things that I might be going through that I can’t quite make sense of, sometimes I write down my thoughts and sometimes I use a song or songs to help express the thoughts inside of me.

This page actually incorporates both. I chose a song and looked up the lyrics online that would closely express what I was feeling and once I wrote those down on my page I continued to write a bit more of my own feelings. Typically when I am done I like to create some art over the top of it as I’m a pretty private person and really don’t want to share all my words and thoughts with others. Sometimes my art will express what I was feeling on the page and often times my art will be a bit more happy trying to find happiness and peace and move on from the turmoil that I may be feeling.

On this page, I created a floral collage in bright happy colors with a bit of gold shimmer trying to find the bright lining in all that I am going through. The layers represent all of the pieces that I had put together over time that once made one full happy piece.

This page has a lot of symbolism and meaning to me and helping me make sense where there seems to be none.

I used stamps from Paperbag Studios - Doodle and Daters to add detail and more depth to my petals. I also used specific stamps like the heart and circles for more symbolism in my journey for peace in this page. I have a quote that I would like to share that came out of this process and the journey though this page and that is:

What does your signature color palette say about you?

As artists, there is little more important in our worlds than color, and what I find interesting is that you can so often tell who created something, based on the way they’ve used color in their work.

This kind of “signature palette” evolves over time. I know that just from looking back at my own artwork, I go through phases of being drawn to different hues. There have been times when I’ve wanted to bring neons into everything, there have been times when I’ve been all about the black and white contrast, and there have been times when I’ve actively avoided certain shades, but I’m always pulled back to my old favorites.

Color psychology is a really fascinating topic, especially for me (as an artist). I love reading up on why I am drawn toward teal drips, or my love for apple green smudges, and I also love learning what kind of feelings my work stimulates in those that view it.

Studies have shown that all humans have a series of innate color associations. For example, the color red can represent danger, and has been shown to increase our heartbeats. However, the more telling color associations tend to be those links we make in our early lives. For example, someone who has fond memories of tending a garden with a beloved grandmother, might be drawn to sunflower shades.

Although color can be really dependent on personal experience, there are still a series of universal emotions and concepts that are associated with each shade:

Pink: sweet, gentle, calm, loving, whimsical

Red: passion, fear, anger, power, desire, energy, determination, attention, warmth, intensity, excitement

Orange: action, enthusiasm, creativity, fascination, success, stimulating, change

Yellow: joyous, uplifting, open, warming, honor, intellect, disturbing, optimism

Green: relaxed, refreshed, natural, harmony, wisdom, faith, truth, sincerity, wealth, envy

Blue: tranquil, trustworthy, strength, serenity, focus, cold, wisdom

Purple: confidence, luxury, ambition, extravagance, magic, dignity, mystery, exotic, respect

Black: simplicity, elegance, standing out, prestigious, mystery, unknown, authority

White: positivity, purity, sense of space, light, perfection, neutrality

Grey: passive, practical, timeless, neutrality

Brown: comfort, friendship, natural, warmth, stability

If you want to create a particular feeling with your artwork, take a look at the lists above and pull out your symbolic colors accordingly.

Found Poetry Altered Envelope Video Tutorial

As soon as I came across this large black envelope at work, I knew it needed to be saved and altered. Its matte texture and thick paper made it perfect to work on.

I knew that the Urban Fringe Art Pops™ were perfect in contrast to pop against the black of the envelope. They are the perfect place to start when building up a collage focal point. Combined with the Mixed Media Essentials stamps, the project came together very easily! I am so in love with both of these products!

As I am currently knee deep in The 100 Day Project with the theme of "found poetry," tying it together with this tutorial and Roben-Marie's products, fit perfectly. By altering the envelope I have an ideal house for multiple poems now in one place.

Abstract Flowers Painting Tutorial

Mixing It Up on Canvas

I am mixing it up a bit this week with a painting tutorial on a "real" canvas board. I know I am partial to paper, but really enjoyed the change. 

I am also using the new DecoArt® Americana Premium Paints, available in select Jo-Ann stores.

The medium-bodied paint offers excellent coverage from its light-fast, heavily-pigmented formula. The special formula works well on canvas and dries to a satin finish. The colors are intermixable, allowing for a wide range of options and I LOVE me some color options!!

I've included quick access to the downloadable color guide below so you can see the range of beautiful colors.

Sherry Canino

Sherry is a mostly self taught mixed media artist and loves discovering new techniques to use in her art with products she already has.  She has a light-hearted style that is typically whimsical but also loves to mix it up and try anything new.  

She is an avid art journal and as such can be found most evenings in her home studio working in her art journal with her 3 beloved pugs at her feet.

Sherry Canino is an Upstate New Yorker and has been published in Syracuse Women’s Magazine. She loves color, coffee, and all things Chicago (Fire, Med, PD…)

Sherry's work can also be seen as part of the StencilGirl Creative Team.

Anna Friesen

Anna is a lover of all things pink, feminine and floral. She lives on a sweet little acreage near Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. She’s a stay-at-home mom to three kids aged 17, 15 and 11, and she loves getting her hands full of painty color!

Her art table (ahem, actually her kitchen table) is often covered with her latest project, which lets her steal a few arty moments throughout the day.

Anna is all about color play (but you’ll always find some pink there), and she loves making beautiful messes with stencils and her gelatin plate.  It is no surprise her favorite art supplies include stencils and acrylic paint.

Anna is a fan of The Hundred Foot Journey and declares her favorite foods are winter veggies like beets and cabbage, but rice and Indian food is a close second.

Anna teaches some great classes, and has spent a year on the StencilGirl Creative Team, so she really does have plenty of inspiration to share.

Karen Gaunt

Karen is a mixed media artist with a passion for color and a soft spot for paint. She works a regular job full time and daydreams all day about the moment she can let loose in her journals in the evening.  Karen also works her magic as part of the StencilGirl Creative Team.

She's a mother as well, and loves nothing more than creating with her daughter in their matching art journals. Karen believes that making art is for everyone and loves to encourage others to join in.

She firmly believes that there is no such thing as too many art journals, pizza is the food of the gods, and everyone should watch (and love) Walking Dead.

Kristi Nazzaro

Kristi Nazzaro is a mixed media artist, born and raised in New Jersey. She is the mama to three awesome children and the wife to one amazing, hardworking man.

Kristi loves all things colorful (even though her favorite supply is her Uni Ball Signo Broad Point White Pen). Her art always includes vibrant colors and her signature scalloped hearts - she’s an avid art journaler and enjoys making inspirational art on shipping tags too.

Her core message is one of positivity, kindness and self-empowerment, but she also lives for ice cream, true crime shows, and a bit of Patrick Swayze.

Ashli Oliver

Ashli lives with her husband and four girls, age 11 and under, in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Ashli is a recovering graphic designer and when she is not busy homeschooling her kiddos, you can find her drinking copious amounts of coffee while playing with paints and papers in her studio. Not only does Ashli love documenting her family's memories and art journaling, but she finds great joy in the whole creative process...which, in her case, usually involves lots of messy, mixed media

Fun! She’s currently anxiously awaiting the final season of Orphan Black, while playing with her watercolors (and inhaling the occasional platter of Buffalo Chicken Wings…)

Jenni Zmuda

Jenni is a homeschooling mom from rural Michigan, where she raises dogs, goats, chickens, kids, and any other stray animal that stumbles into the yard!

When she’s not doing that, she creates. She likes to dabble in many different realms of the art world, but art journaling is her favorite, because it’s just so freeing and forgiving. Don't like what you did? Paint over it, or even tear it out. She loves sharing what she does with others, and above all, empowering them to believe that they can do it too.

Jenni is all about the pizza and the paint layers - she likes to keep it simple!

Mixed Media Art Pocket Video Tutorial

The idea for this little art pocket actually happened by chance when I cut up an old project.  I cut off the "flap" and started folding it and it just came to me!  Stick a tag in it and you have a creative alternative for a card and it is perfect for mail art!  Hope you enjoy it!

Making Mail Art for Find Out Fridays

What is Find Out Fridays?

Find Out Fridays is a weekly feature on Donna Downey's blog where a different artist is tasked with incorporating art supplies (sent by Donna) into art-related projects.
