Meet the 2018 Design Team

2018 DT.jpg

Hey Friends!!!

I’m beyond excited to welcome a new design team on board for 2018. These ladies are all amazing artists in their own right and I can’t wait to see all of the fun projects they create for us in the coming year.

This time around I’m doing something a little different. I’ve done a little “pre-design team” interview with each of my creatives so that I can share a behind-the-scenes glimpse of each of their artistic processes. I love that stuff - don’t you?

So without further ado, I’m thrilled to introduce them to you!

Have a blessed day!

Roben-Marie

Cindy Gilstrap

Cindy is a Mom to two awesome kids and to two crazy rescue pups. She is a self-taught mixed media artist from Texas with a love for art journaling, messy paint palettes, vintage paper, stitching, vintage fabric, and new art supplies.

It’s not unusual for her to run errands with paint on her clothes. She loves combining old and new, creating quirky art, and inspiring others. She believes creative play is so important and tries to make it a daily habit.

What does your art space look like?

I feel blessed to have my own space in our home. We turned what was supposed to be a small office into my studio. My art space is eclectic, colorful, and inspiring when it's not a mess. It's decorated with vintage finds that I use for storage and display. I love displaying things that inspire me like vintage buttons, vintage books, and my collection of 1950's vintage typewriters that are all fun colors! It's definitely my happy place!

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

I have to pick 3? I'm not sure I can but I'll go with an art journal, gesso, and acrylic paint.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

I'm a country music girl. I also have a small TV in my studio and usually try to catch up on recorded shows. Sometimes I just prefer it to be quiet and I just get lost in my process.

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

I love all colors but my go to color palette is pink, aqua, orange, and lime green.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

I'm not sure I have a signature one but I gravitate towards messy scallops and messy circles.

Kristin Peterson

Kristin is a third generation artist originally from South Dakota, now residing just inside Minnesota. She loves color, collage and all things worn and loved.

Kristin is always exploring and expanding the creative depths of acrylic paint. She very much enjoys vintage collage work, art journaling and mixed media. Her paintings contain a vibrant mix of color and a little funk, sprinkled with a hint of sensibility. And, if she can stuff it into her sewing machine, she will.

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

My favorites songs right now: Havana (Camila Cabello), Holdin’ On (Flume), Happiness Instrumental (The Foreign Exchange), Fashion Week (Wale), Girls Like (Tinie Tempah).

Laurie Haley

Laurie is a mixed media artist, lover of fabric, clay, paper and anything else that sparks her interest. She fell madly in love with mixed media art a few years ago. She can’t choose a favorite color.  She has enough paint brushes to be dangerous but loves to paint with her fingers a lot of the time. In most of her videos you can hear the sound of her beagle snoring at some point.

She loves spending time in her art studio and enjoys making videos to share what she loves doing with others in the hopes that she will inspire and encourage others to do what they love too.

She sees beauty in all the seasons. She loves the Lord and is very thankful for His hand on her life.

What does your art space look like?

I am blessed to have a large bonus room upstairs in my home to create in.  It gets messy when I am working but when I clean up it is a cozy environment and organized in MY mind. lol  To someone that doesn't 'get' me it would probably be a bit overwhelming and not make much sense.

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

Oh gosh...this is tough. I have several I love to use regularly but if I HAD to pick three this second 'or else' I would have to say acrylic paint, fabric, sewing machine (thread included so don't count that as one) and don't tell on me but I'm squeezing in a Stabilo-all pencil too.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

If I am filming while I create I am watching the camera monitor to make sure I am in frame (which sometimes I forget to do). If I am not filming I am listening to classical piano music and my beagle snoring or sometimes I Skype art with a friend while I create. And sometimes I just enjoy the quiet.

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

This is difficult for me because I love color so much but currently these colors seem to often sneak into my work...spa blue, sea breeze, razzle berry, white (or gesso) and black.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Flowers usually wind up in my work no matter what I start out trying to create. I also use a lot of messy line scribbles, circles and hearts.

Sue Kemnitz

When Sue’s son was born about 30 years ago, she turned her brief free moments toward art. Now, as a full-time artist, she creates to inspire and encourage you — ok, herself a bit, too!

Second only to her passion for Jesus, she’s found she has a passion for teaching and leading others, helping them to become the confident artist they are meant to be. Whether a beginner or having dabbled for years, you will enjoy her “hey – we can do this!” approach.

This fall, her book "Bible Journaling: Honoring the Spirit" was published and is now available at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Jo-ann’s and on Amazon.

What does your art space look like?

Getting smaller! I just moved from a townhouse with 3 rooms devoted to my art, to a corner of our new living room on the shore of Lake Superior. So I can relate to those who work in a corner of their home!

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

Though I think I could live without any particular supply (I would substitute!), my current go-to's are: Dina Wakley's paints, Roben-Marie’s stamps and circle or square stencils.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

1. The crashing waves and the sound of birds and eagles are my favorite. 2. Sometimes I stream worship music, but 3. I also enjoy it simply "quiet".

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

Oooh! Turquoise, ocean (a teal color) magenta, orange, cadmium yellow, night (a dark blue) and purple.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Angel feathers.

Torrie lynn Gass

Torrie is the artist behind Fox + Hazel. She is an artist, designer, wife and mother of three kids aged 5 and under. Torrie chronicles her own art journey on her blog and Instagram.

Through process videos, blogging and teaching online workshops,  Torrie is passionate about sparking creativity in others and teaching others how to unlock their own creativity.

She loves art journaling, Game of Thrones, punk music and would have a coffee IV if they existed

What does your art space look like?

I'm very lucky to have my own studio/office, and I use a lot of Ikea furniture for storage, because I have a LOT of supplies! My space is a loft on the second floor in my home, so it gets great light and I can still keep an eye on my kids if I have to sneak away. It's always covered in half finished projects everywhere though! It's very bright and chaotic, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

Oh my, I think I would not be able to survive without paint pens, acrylic inks or matte medium!

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

I mostly listen to Spotify playlists as I'm working, but occasionally I'll turn on a podcast. My music preference is pop punk and alternative, which really energize me as I work!

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

I feel like my color palette is always changing, but right now I'm really drawn to teal, cadmium red, mustard yellow and black. If I don't know what color to use, I will gravitate towards shades of turquoise, teal and aqua a lot of the time with a healthy dose of black!

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Almost all my spreads and projects end up with some dash marks, asterisk stars or triangle shapes.

Kristi enjoys all areas of mixed media and can be found most often creating altered art tags with strong, positive messages.  She also enjoys working in her many art journals where she can creatively express and document her day to day life. Kristi has a love for bright, vibrant colors and a strong affection for white Uniball Signo gel pens.

What does your art space look like?

My art space is currently my kitchen table. I have most of my paints, brushes, stencils, etc in two Raskog carts from IKEA. I wheel them out and put them away every time I work. However, there are piles of scraps, under paper and actual art journals all over.

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

White Uniball Signo Gel Pen, Gelli Plate, Stencils

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

I usually listen to a podcast (my current favorite is Room in the Trees with Sabrina Ward Harrison and Trent Reynolds) or I listen to Tom Petty radio on Pandora.

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

Always shades of blue with lime green, bright pink and a touch of black and white.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Tiny x’s or a scallop edged heart.

Ashli Oliver

Ashli (a.k.a. soapHOUSEmama) lives with her husband and four girls, aged 12 and under, in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Ashli is a recovering graphic designer and when she is not busy homeschooling her kiddos, you can find her drinking copious amounts of coffee while playing with paint and pretty paper in her studio.

Ashli loves creative expression through art journaling, memory keeping, mail art, and much more! No matter what she is working on, it usually involves lots of messy, painty fun!

What does your art space look like?

A lovely, rustic industrial space full of light that is always a mess!

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

White paint, a pencil, watercolors.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

Dateline, 20/20, or 48 hours.... guilty pleasures!

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

Soft pastels with pops of black.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Oh hmmmm.... I'm not sure! Messy pen lines and circles? Or maybe faces? Sometimes it's hard to recognize your own style!

Jenni Zmuda

Jenni lives in rural Michigan where she raises dogs, goats, chickens, kids, and any other stray animal that stumble into her yard.

When she’s not doing that, she creates. She like to dabble in many different realms of the art world, but art journaling is her favorite. It is just so freeing and forgiving.

Don't like what you did? Paint over it, or even tear it out and save it for another project.

She loves sharing what she does with others and above all, showing people art, like life, doesn't have to be perfect to be considered beautiful.

JenniRound.png

What does your art space look like?

Small. I have a table along a wall in my (tiny) bedroom. It proves you don't need a big fancy space to be able to create.

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

I'm a firm believer in using what you have. You don't need the fanciest latest supply to create beautiful art. That being said, I always have to have a Stabilo-All Pencil, white acrylic paint, and acrylic inks.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

I always have music playing. Of all genres, depending on what mood I'm in.

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

Blues. I love all shades of blue!

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Probably a messy scallop. It's easy and doesn't have to be perfect.

Anna Friesen

Anna loves wandering to observe the little things. She sees beauty in mundane things and enjoys capturing it through her camera lens. She loves good writing, heart-filled, warm, cozy literature (no horror genres for her).

She seeks the JOY in Christ - he is the One she rests in for her salvation. Anna is an unschooling mama to three precious souls. She has a long-suffering and devoted hubby of 22 years. She likes using adjectives a lot. She adore all shades of PINK, teal, and all the deep hues of purple. One day she wants to own a yellow, quirky and cutesy art studio, but until then, her kitchen table is where she creates.

What does your art space look like?

I work on my kitchen table, with a cart and baskets all around me, which I haul out of the bedroom.

Which 3 creative supplies could you simply not live without?

Acrylic paint, stencils and my Gelli plate.

What do you listen to/watch while you’re making your art?

If it's evening, I watch whatever the fam is watching, so Planet Earth, YouTubers, hubby's westerns, etc. I listen to my kids' favourite music, so mostly pop/rock/indie. They usually love what I love. I also listen to Christian worship music or classical.

Tell us about your go-to color palette.

Purple, pink, teal and yellow.

What’s your signature design or doodle?

Whimsical dots, circles, flowers, sometimes grids and lines.
