Stencil Test Drive...

Stencil Girl just released a line of stencils designed by Jessica Sporn. Jessica asked me and a bunch of other artists to take her stencils on a "test drive."  The stencil hop began this month and will continue once or twice a month through June 2013.  We'll show you how we used her stencils, and you're invited to play along too.  Look for my post on May 2.   Visit Jessica's blog HERE for all the details!

Have a  blessed day!

Studio Peek...

I want to answer a few questions I have been asked lately about my inky fabric.

Q: How do you store your fabric?

A: I hang the fabric which allows the pieces to dry.  I have these metal shelves in my studio and I just wrap the fabric around the posts.

Q: Do you wash the fabric?

A: No, I do not wash the fabric.  That would totally change it and remove a lot of the color.

Q: Do you iron the fabric?

A: Yes, I iron the fabric if I need the wrinkles removed.

Have a  blessed day!

Friday Fill-Ins...

And...here we go!

1. Oh, my Christmas tree is dying a slow death and dropping needles all over the place.
2. It is best to take care of your health sooner, rather than later!
3. Buy one, because you don't really need more than that unless we are talking about doughnuts.
4. I am determined to get better at free-motion stitching and I say this positively!
5. Soon, I'm going to have to update my Will.
6. Have you ever made a wish when seeing shooting stars?
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to finishing the sample for my next on-line workshop, tomorrow my plans include attending our church Christmas party and Sunday, I want to finish wrapping Christmas presents while I watch football!

A Completed Painting...

...maybe!

24 x 24 - Number 19

I started this canvas in Flora Bowley's Blooming True workshop and put it aside for awhile.  Of all places, I hung it up in our weight room.  I looked at it regularly and it never "spoke" to me. Each time I looked at it I was reminded that I didn't like it and had no clue what to do with it.  Last month, I took Tracy Verdugo's Paint Mojo workshop and when I got home I decided it was time to take a look at this canvas again.

Is it finished? I am not completely sure and might add more to it later but at least I made enough progress to say that I am happy with where it is now.  I like that I can revisit it later if I choose.

Have a  blessed day!

Advent Calendar Ideas...

I know it is late, but I love the idea of creating an advent calendar so here are several that I really like.  If you are late out of the gate too, maybe run your calendar through the new year!

You Can Upcycle That...

A couple of weeks ago I did some cleaning and came across several embellished t-shirts.  I cut off the "good" parts and plan to incorporate pieces of them into some of my mixed media projects.

Tips for Upcycling Clothing

1. Buttons: don't toss it if it has some great buttons on it.  Be sure to look at back pockets for interesting buttons as well.

2. Trim: look for pretty trims along collars, sleeves or the bottom hem. Ruffles and other trims are perfect for adding to journal covers, bags or pillows.

3. Zippers: cut or tear out zippers and re-use them.  Keep the raw fabric on the zipper for an edgy, messy look.

4. Fabric: that wool sweater can be felted and the fabric used in a number of projects. Be sure to check the wool content and make sure it is 100% wool before felting. Sheer fabrics can be ripped or cut into strips to create closures on journals, bows on packages, etc.

5. Pockets: Like that pocket? Cut it off and use it on a journal cover or inside a handmade purse. A pocket with a buttoned flap would make a great little holder for pens, etc.

6. Garmet Labels: some clothes have colorful and interesting labels.  Cut them out and use them like collage pieces in your fabric projects.

7. Interesting Words or Images: cut these pieces off and consider layering them into another project.  Like that abstract image or that bird? Free motion stitch over it onto a bag, pillow, hat, placemat or even an art quilt.

Thrift Store Finds

I found this DKNY skirt at Good Will for $4 and the front is covered with these beautiful embroidered flowers.

This shirt has nice buttons and pleats stitched on the front.  I have already cut pieces from it and used them in a journal project.  Check it out HERE.
